Outline of 2nd lesson (June 21st, 2013)

Sorry this is late.

This is the way I remember the lesson for the 21st:

(1) Started with homework.

Read everyone's compositions and looked at some of the grammar.

作文の宿題を皆で見て、文法の目立つところを説明しました。

(2) P. 13, element 7: Opinions about on-line friends.

Talked a little about the three opinions in class.
教科書に載っている3つの意見をある程度話し合った。(もっと話しあってもいいですよ! :-)

Focused on the first opinion for grammar and vocabulary.
その最初の意見の文法と単語を皆で見た。

(3) P. 13 elements 9 through 11: more about on-line friends.
オンライン友のことの続き

(3a) Worked through element 9 as a class: present vs. present progressive.

Explained some things about present plain and present continuous/progressive.
単純現在形や現在進行形についてある程度説明しました。

進行中の活動と現在の状態と言っても、英語と日本語の感覚にはずれるのがあります。

(3b) Practiced with element 10.

(4) Demonstrated the use of the DVD in the back of the book.
It's not a CD!
You should be able to use it on a personal computer or on a DVD player.
パソコンでも、 DVDプレイヤーでも再生できるはずです。
If you have problems, let me know -- here or in class.
うまく行けなかったら一言でもお願いします。ここでも、クラスでも解決策を探しましょう。

(4) P. 14, element 1: disagreements (fallings out): unit 1 audio track 8.
Audioscript on page 87.
喧嘩についてのリスニング。文字を87ページに参考できます。

Only had time for speaker 1, father and son.
時間を見て、一人目の話しで済ました。

My computer was not loud enough, so we read it as a class.
ボクのコンピュータの接続がうまく行けなかったので、皆で読みました。

Explained grammar and vocabulary.

(5) Read through the article on the history of Adidas and Puma in class, working through the grammar and vocabulary as we went.

(6) Briefly touched on phrasal verbs and past vs. present perfect.
句が動詞になる場合や現在完了形の解釈に触れました。

(7) P. 17, element 2, phrasal verbs for childhood experiences.
Talked about the meanings in class.

(8) In-class composition exercise, childhood experiences.
子供の頃の出来事についての授業内の作文と発表

I did not assign homework.
宿題は指定しなかった。

You can try out the DVD.
DVDを見てみても良いし、
You can also try out the workbook in the back of the book.
教科書の後ろのワークブックを試みても良いし、
And you can also review or read ahead.
復習しても、予習しても構いません。

Next week we will work on material from pages 20 to 29.
来週は20〜29ページの内容をネタにします。

Talking about friendship

(A group of students are talking about friends and on-line friends.)

Alice: I don't want too many friends.
仲間を増やしたくない。

Jack: Why not?

Alice: It's hard to keep up with lots of friends.
仲間が多くなると誰がどうなっているかがわからなくなる。

Sherry: I know what you mean. I think, if I had more than three close friends, I'd never have time to do anything.
わかるわ。親友が四人以上になったら、[自分の]ものをやる時間が完全になくなると思うわ。

Jack: Well, friendships do take time. But all your friends don't have to be close friends.
まあ、友情ある関係は確かに手間がかかるのです。ただ、友人と言っても、皆が親友ではない。

Alice: How many friends do you think you want?
でわ、自分なら、友人は何人がいい?

Jack: That's a trick question.
引っ掛け問題の質問です。

Tim: You're dodging the question.
逃げてるんじゃない?

Jack: No. I don't want to set a limit on my friendships. I can choose how close I get to people.
いや、友人関係に制限を付けたくない。親しくなるかならないか、自分で決めたい。

Sherry: You mean, maybe I'm a close friend one day and maybe I'm not the next day?
というのは、今日ははアタシが親友、明日は親友でもないなんかあり?

Jack: Well, sort of.
ええっ、まあ。

Sherry: That's cold.
冷た。

Tim: Jack, you're just a cold-hearted brute. That's all.
獣のジャックよ。心が冷たいやんか。

Jack: Yeah. I know. No way!
そう、やな。違うよ!

Alice: I think I know what you mean. It's unnatural to say, "You're a close friend!" to one friend, and, "You're not!" to another.
わかるわかる。ある人に「あなたが親友だよ」と言いながら、違う人に「お前はただの知り合いだけだよ」なんか言うのが不自然。

Sherry: Just kidding.
じょうだんだよ!冗談。

Tim: We guys are all brutes. Right Jack?
おいら男らみんな獣や、な、ジャック。

Jack: Arguing with Theresa again?
またテレサと喧嘩?

Sherry: Theresa is so stuck up!
テレサったら、あれほどツンしてる。

Alice: Theresa is my friend!
テレサって、私の友達です。

Sherry: Stuck up in a nice way, I mean!
いい意味のツンしてるって。

TIm: Put your foot in it this time, Sherry.
ヘマよ、シェリー。

Sherry: Sorry.
ごめんなさい。

Jack: Sometimes your mouth runs ahead of you. It's one of the things we like about you.
まあ、口がたまに効きすぎるのですね。君の美点だよ。

Tim: I'd say it's one of the things we put up with because we like her.
俺に言わしてもらうと、彼女が好きだから気にしないことにしている。

Sherry: Don't talk about me!
アタシのこと、言わないで!

Tim: Okay, we put up with it because we like you.

いいよ。そんなことないよ。君が好きだからだよ。

Alice: Behave yourself, Tim.
ティム殿。行儀よく。

Tim: But we do!
 だけどそうだよ。

Alice: But we don't have to come right out and say it.
そんなに直接言わなくていいものはいわなくて良いのです。

This is the outline of what we covered in class on June 15th, according to my memory:
  1. Introducing me.
  2. Practice introducing yourself.
  3. Practice introducing a friend.
  4. Guessing relationships of people (pictures on p. 7).
  5. Talking about relationships, phrases and vocabulary (element 3 on page 7).
  6. Reviewing the 5W1H question words: what, who, why, when, where, and how.
  7. Practice asking questions (cultural pictures on p. 10).
  8. Reading about cultural issues: Not in My Culture (text, p. 10).
  9. Study: questions about the reading (element 10 part (a) on p. 10).
  10. How many friends should one have? (text, p. 12.)
  11. Short opinion essay, "How many friends should I have?" (See the teacher's really short example, here.)
We did not finish the essay in class, so it was part of the homework: three to five sentences is okay.

The rest of the homework was to review pages 6 through 12, studying what you find interesting. Then preview page 13. Look at between 2 and 4 hours of study.

If you have questions, you can use the comment function to ask me. (I usually won't be on-line, but I will check the comments once a day.)
