Talking about friendship

(A group of students are talking about friends and on-line friends.)

Alice: I don't want too many friends.
仲間を増やしたくない。


Jack: Why not?

Alice: It's hard to keep up with lots of friends.
仲間が多くなると誰がどうなっているかがわからなくなる。

Sherry: I know what you mean. I think, if I had more than three close friends, I'd never have time to do anything.
わかるわ。親友が四人以上になったら、［自分の］ものをやる時間が完全になくなると思うわ。

Jack: Well, friendships do take time. But all your friends don't have to be close friends.
まあ、友情ある関係は確かに手間がかかるのです。ただ、友人と言っても、皆が親友ではない。

Alice: How many friends do you think you want?
でわ、自分なら、友人は何人がいい？

Jack: That's a trick question.
引っ掛け問題の質問です。

Tim: You're dodging the question.
逃げてるんじゃない？


Jack: No. I don't want to set a limit on my friendships. I can choose how close I get to people.
いや、友人関係に制限を付けたくない。親しくなるかならないか、自分で決めたい。

Sherry: You mean, maybe I'm a close friend one day and maybe I'm not the next day?
というのは、今日ははアタシが親友、明日は親友でもないなんかあり？

Jack: Well, sort of.
ええっ、まあ。

Sherry: That's cold.
冷た。

Tim: Jack, you're just a cold-hearted brute. That's all.
獣のジャックよ。心が冷たいやんか。

Jack: Yeah. I know. No way!
そう、やな。違うよ！

Alice: I think I know what you mean. It's unnatural to say, "You're a close friend!" to one friend, and, "You're not!" to another.
わかるわかる。ある人に「あなたが親友だよ」と言いながら、違う人に「お前はただの知り合いだけだよ」なんか言うのが不自然。

Sherry: Just kidding.
じょうだんだよ！冗談。

Tim: We guys are all brutes. Right Jack?
おいら男らみんな獣や、な、ジャック。

Jack: Arguing with Theresa again?
またテレサと喧嘩？

Sherry: Theresa is so stuck up!
テレサったら、あれほどツンしてる。

Alice: Theresa is my friend!
テレサって、私の友達です。

Sherry: Stuck up in a nice way, I mean!
いい意味のツンしてるって。

TIm: Put your foot in it this time, Sherry.
ヘマよ、シェリー。

Sherry: Sorry.
ごめんなさい。

Jack: Sometimes your mouth runs ahead of you. It's one of the things we like about you.
まあ、口がたまに効きすぎるのですね。君の美点だよ。

Tim: I'd say it's one of the things we put up with because we like her.
俺に言わしてもらうと、彼女が好きだから気にしないことにしている。

Sherry: Don't talk about me!
アタシのこと、言わないで！

Tim: Okay, we put up with it because we like you.

いいよ。そんなことないよ。君が好きだからだよ。

Alice: Behave yourself, Tim.
ティム殿。行儀よく。

Tim: But we do!
 だけどそうだよ。

Alice: But we don't have to come right out and say it.
そんなに直接言わなくていいものはいわなくて良いのです。
