Outline of 5th lesson (27 July 2013)

Hello to our friends in Australia! (But you won't have time to read this yet.)

Started with correcting p. 30, element 9.

Then we moved on to checking everyone's compositions about our homes.

Next, we looked at the pictures of houses on p. 36 and discussed the following questions:
Where do you think this house is?
A typical answer might be
I think it's in Europe.
And,
Which house do you think this room is in?
Picture A would appear to match the discription of property 1, and B appears to be property 2.
見た目で、写真A は持ち家1、写真B は持ち家2にあたるようです。

I'm not positive which room belongs where, but the style and the talk about plants and sunlight would appear to put the room in picture 2 in the house of property 1. And the library style of picture 1 looks British, which would match the house of property 2
確実でもありませんが、写真2のスタイルや植木などや日当たりは持ち家1のように思っています。そして、写真1の図書室はイギリス風に思いますので持ち家2に相当するでしょう。

Then I asked you this question:

And I asked you to write about your dream house. I asked you to present your descriptions in class, but we did not take time to correct them.

I gave you the following examples:

I want to live in a real house, not an apartment – a single dwelling house.

I want a house with a garden where we can keep the turtle.

I don't want a house that is hard to live in.

I want a music room in my house.

After I assigned the homework, I explained a bit about future forms in English. We don't really have a future. This is like Japanese. We use present tense forms, and use context to indicate the future.

Certain helping verbs and verb phrases are indicative of the future --

will:意思・進み出てやる決意(過去形 would)
shall: お決まり(過去形 should)
must: 命(原型は許可の may, 過去形 might)
can: 能力(過去形 could)
be going to: 向かって進む様子、予定

Then talked about where we might want to go to live or study abroad, and did some composition and conversation practice exercises with that.

The interesting stories (28.3)

Element 3, pp. 28-29
Mrs. Bright went travelling, but she got lost.
ブライトが旅行していたが、迷ってしまった。
"Get lost" は「迷っちゃう」ようないみです。

Where did she want to go?
どこに行きたかったでしょう?

She wanted to go to a supermarket in the city of Calais, in France.
フランスの都市のカレーのスーパーマーケットに行きたかったのですね。

Where did she get lost?
どこで迷っちゃったでしょう?

She got lost looking for a supermarket in Calais. So she was already in Calais when she got lost.
カレーの街で、スーパーを探しているところで迷っちゃった。したがって、迷いだしたところはもう、カレーに着いていた。

So the place she wanted to go was the supermarket.
ということで、行きたかった後ころはスーパーだったでしょう。

Where did she end up? Where did she find herself?
結局、どこまで行っちゃった?どこでやっと道がわかったでしょう?
"End up" は「たどり着く」ような意味です。"Find oneself" は「我に返る」ような意味で、「気がついて、自分の居る場所がわかる」意味にも使うのです。

Why didn't she ask directions?
なんで道を聞かなかったでしょう?

She was embarrassed. Why was she embarrassed?
恥ずかしかったので聞かなかったそうです。どうして恥ずかしかった?

Because she didn't have a map, and she didn't know how to speak French.
地図持たなかっただけではなく、フランス語も出来なかったのです。

Writing exercise -- my home

Here are two examples for reference, one is the home where I grew up. One is my present home. I will be careful not to include private information.
自分の家について作文の例を作ります。一つは生まれた家です。一つは現在の家です。個人情報が入らないようにします。

You do not need to write this much. Try for at least six sentences, but if you can only make three or four, that's okay.
これほどの作文でもなくてもいいです。6文を目処として書いてください。3、4文さえできたら、次回のレッスンに持ってきてください。

I will refrain from translating this. Challenge yourself!
ここでは訳しません。チャレンジしてください。

The home where I grew up was a one-story house in west Texas. It had a large yard, in front, in back, and on both sides. There was a wooden fence on the north, and a chain fence on the south. We owned the vacant lot on the south, too.

There were four bedrooms, two on the north and two on the south. My bedroom was on the north-west corner. I shared the bedroom with my brother.

It had a long kitchen with two sinks. My mother didn't like the kitchen because it was too narrow.

There was a large den attached to the north-east corner. We often played Uno and other card games or board games in the den. We sometimes ate in the den, but we usually ate in the kitchen. And there was a large garage attached to the den. There was no TV in the den.

It was a large house, but houses and land where I grew up are cheap.

I now live with my wife and children in an apartment between Osaka and Kobe. It's on the fourth floor. The apartment building includes about 32 units.

The apartment has a living-room/dining-room/kitchen in the center. There are three bedrooms. Only one of the bedrooms has traditional tatami flooring. My children have desks in that room.

We keep a turtle on the veranda

There are no TVs in the house. I am not sure that's such a good thing.

Outline of 4th lesson (20 July 2013)

It was nice to see you all again after two weeks off.

We started with the news story exercises (element 3) on pp. 28-29.

Then we worked on the past simple and past progressive/continuous exercise on p. 30 (element 8) as a class.

I asked you to do element 9 for homework.
宿題の一つですよ。忘れないでください。

There are missing verbs and verb phrases in the paragraph for element 9. The words in the red box are clues. The verb phrase, "was staying" is intended as an example. I think you'll use each word and phrase once.
項目の段落はちゃんとできていないのです。抜かれた単語動詞や二語動詞を適切に入れて書きなおしてください。その上の赤い線の箱の中にある単語は手掛かりになるはずです。「was staying」の文は見本のつもりです。動詞や二語動詞は一回ずつ使っていいと思います。

First, read the paragraph and try to understand it. Then look for the places to put the verbs in.
先ずは段落を読んで、理解してみてください。それから動詞の入る場所を探してください。

Why does the speaker end up staying overnight in the hospital with her mother and new-born sister?
この話を教えてくれる人はどうしてお母さんと新しく生まれた妹と一緒に一晩入院してしまうのですか?

After talking about the homework, we moved on to p. 31, working exercises 1a and 4 in class.

From there, we looked at the movie posters on p. 32. I read the dialogue (tracks 1.18 and 1.19 on p. 88) and we discerned that the dialogue was about the movie, The Orphanage.

Please take the time to listen to the dialogues on the DVD.

Then we talked a little as a class about favorite movies. Two people were good enough to tell us about their favorite movies.

お気に入りの映画のことを皆で少し話しました。二人の方に自分の気に入りを発表していただきました。

For more homework, and for the preview for the next class, I asked you to write a little about your own homes. You can look at pages 35 and 36 for ideas.

Please don't put private information in your homework. Only tell us things you don't mind everyone knowing.

Tom: No. She works on Saturdays. She does not work on Sundays, so we are planning to study tomorrow after Church.

Dad: Tomorrow? On Sunday? You are both working too hard. You need a break. Do you need any help?

Tom: Do we have any cocoa in the house? She likes coffee.

Dad: Hmm. And, since we don't drink coffee, you'd like to have some cocoa for her to drink instead. Mother, do we have any cocoa in the house?

Mom: I'm afraid we don't have any. We drank it all last winter. But I can make some cold cinnamon apple juice, instead. I think she'll like that.

Tom: Thanks Mom. I think so, too.

Dad: Where is she staying at the moment, anyway? I understand she was living with her uncle, but that there was some trouble.

Tom: Well, there was not really any trouble. Her uncle suddenly got transferred, and they don't live there any more. But she is still living at the house, watching it for them until they sell it.

Mom: Wow! That's a lot of responsibility.

Dad: Mother, can you look at this article in the business section? I can't understand it.

Mom: Let me see it. Oh, dear. I'm not understanding it very well, either. Tom, did you see this?

Tom: Oh, that. The reporter does not understand the subject. She made a total mess of the story. I'll check the internet for you, Dad.

Dad: So, Tom, you look happy. Are you thinking about someone?

Mom: Dad!

Dad: Sorry. I guess that's not a question I should ask.

Mom: Oh, look at the time! I want to go shopping for clothes today, but I don't want to be too late coming home. I hate driving in the dark. Are you ready to go, Dad?

Dad: Yes, I'm ready to go. Let me get my shoes.

Mom: Do you want to come, too, Tom?

Tom: I'm staying here until I finish this homework assignment. I want to be able to focus on the project tomorrow.


Leftovers from three weeks ago

In another month, most students in the US will be attending their first days back at school. Many schools will have an assembly for the beginning of the school year.But the opening day assembly is for everyone, not just new students.
(後一ヶ月間、米国のほとんどの学生は学校に戻ります。大抵の場合は新学年の始業式がありますが、新入生だけではなく、皆が参加します。)

Very few schools have formal matriculation ceremonies, maybe just private schools and colleges. Matriculation is not really a tradition in the US.
「入学式」にあたる「matriculation」はすべての学校が行うのではない。入学式を行なっている学校はほ、私立学校や大学院ぐらいだと思います。入学式はアメリカの学校の伝統的な行事ではない。

Writing practice -- favorite movie


And we had another classroom writing assignment:

  • Who starred in it? (Who were the actors?) 主役などはだれですか?

It's Its action scenes make me very excited. 
そのアクションシーンが俺をとても興奮した状態にさせてくれる。

Woops! I was going to return to this, and I forgot.
しまった!この文章に戻るつもりだったのに。
 The action scenes are very exciting.

のほうが自然で意味が巧く伝わる。
「exciting」とは「興奮させるほど面白い」と考えてください。
やっぱり、日本語と逆に思われるけど、映画や遊園地などは「exciting」であれば、自分が「excited」となる。「excite」は「興奮する」ではなく「興奮させる」という意味ですから。]

[ちなみに、「it's」みたいに、代名詞にアポストロフィーのチョンがあれば、省略です。代名詞の所有格は別の、チョンなしの単語がありますから。]

Writing practice -- a good friend.


We had a classroom writing assignment:

Please write a few sentences about your best friend,
or about a good friend.



Things you might write:

  • Tell where you and your friend first met;
  • Tell how you and your friend first met;
  • Describe your friend's personality;
  • Tell about your friend's interests;
  • Tell what you and your friend like to do together;
  • Etc.

Some of the sentences I want everyone to be able to write:

2006年に知り合いになってから関係が続いている。


She belongs to the ping pong club.

(But the most correct grammar is,
もっときれいな文法は次の通りです。
She is shorter than I.
Either way is acceptable in high school writing.
高校生の作文にはどちらでもいいです。)



Junior high school is where we met.

知り合ったのは中学校でした。

(Or  
ただし、
We met at junior high school.
feels a little more natural.
のほうがもっと自然の語順です。)


His jokes make me laugh.
彼の冗談で笑っちゃう。


I think [that] she is one of the most important people in my life.
彼女はわたしの人生の中の(一番)重要人物の一人だと思います


We met at the park near my house when I was three years old.
私が3歳だったころ、家に近い公園で会いました。


When we first met, I didn't think she was interesting.
最初に彼女に会ったところ、面白い人に思わなかった。

But now I think that she is very interesting.
今はとても面白い人に思います。


We have become good friends.
仲良い友達になって来ました。

または、
We became good friends.

is okay, too.
でもだいたい同じ意味です。)

Outline of 3rd Lesson (29 June 2013)

We started the lesson with a composition exercise, a few sentences about a best friend or a good friend.
今度は作文の練習から入りました。親友や仲良い友達のことの数文を書いてもらいました。

Then we worked on the review and practice on p. 20, answering individually and checking the answers in class. We couldn't get to element 5.
その次は20ページ の復習・練習を勉強して、答え合わせはクラス全体で行いました。

After the review, we talked about modern habits in using media, from the material in element 2 on p. 21.
復習の後は、21頁の2の資料を元に、現代における報道の利用習慣を取り上げたのです。

Then we looked at the Man on Wire movie review and wrote about our own favorite movies or books.
その次は「Man on Wire」という映画のレビューを見てから自分の好きな映画や本について作文しました。

Before we finished, we talked a little about the antique TVs on p. 26 and looked at the vocabulary and phrases for that.
最後に、26頁の時代物テレビをちょこっと話題にして、語句と語彙を見てから終わりました。

The "Stories in the news" exercise on pp. 28 - 29 was left as homework. Don't forget!
28〜29頁の「ニュースの話」の問題は宿題にしたのです。忘れないでください。

Next time, we will go through pp. 28 - 34.  We'll try to talk about the movies on p. 32, so you may want to look them on on Wikipedia or IMDB or something. (Me, too.)
次回は28〜34頁を取り上げるつもりです。32頁の映画を話ししたいので、ボクも含めて、ウィキペディアやインターネットムービーデータベスなどで調べてみましょう。

Please take the time to listen to the the material for elements 2 and 3 on p. 32, audio tracks 1.18 and 1.19 on the DVD.
32頁の2と3の資料(DVDのトラック 1.18 及び 1.19)を、時間を設けて聞いてきてください。
